Start a Cat Ba round trip with whatever cannot move, such as a flight, cruise or hotel booking, then choose each direction separately. Your return does not have to match your outbound vehicle, and on some routes it cannot. Allow for a sea crossing both ways, and treat every time as provisional until your written confirmation arrives.
Fix the dates that cannot move
Write down the fixed points of your trip first: an international flight, a cruise boarding time, a tour date, or a hotel you have already paid for. Then work backwards. The return bus should fit around those commitments, not the other way round.
Count usable days rather than nights. If your outbound bus arrives in the afternoon, that day is mostly gone, and your return day is shaped by its departure time. Two nights can give you only one full day on the island.
Choose each direction on its own
A round trip here is two journeys in one request. You select a vehicle and a departure for the way out, then a vehicle and a departure for the way back. The search asks for a return date on or after your departure date, and it only offers a round trip where a reverse route is listed. If none is listed, choose one way or contact the team.
Compare the timetables for both directions rather than assuming they mirror each other. Each vehicle has its own departures, and a time that works on the way out may have no equivalent on the way back. Pickup and drop-off points can also differ between vehicles, so check them for each leg.
The return can use a different crossing
Hanoi to Cat Ba lists speedboat, cable-car and drive-on ferry options. Cat Ba to Hanoi lists speedboat and drive-on ferry tickets, plus private vehicles, but no cable-car ticket. If you take the cable car out, you will come back another way.
The drive-on ferry limousine has one listed departure each way: a morning one from Hanoi and a midday one from Cat Ba. A plan built around that ticket has to fit both times.
Allow an overnight stay after a full-day activity
The date field accepts the same day for both legs, but that does not make it a good plan. The full-day Lan Ha Bay tours sold by Cat Ba Outdoors are listed to finish at 17:00 or later, so we advise against relying on a bus back the same day. We suggest at least one night on the island, with your return on the following day or later.

Leave room around flights
Our Hanoi drop-off is in the Old Quarter, not at Noi Bai Airport, so a flight needs a further transfer and time for check-in. As a planning rule, we suggest reaching Hanoi the day before an early flight rather than connecting straight from the island. Weather and operating conditions can affect a crossing, and a spare evening is the simplest protection.
Airport routes are quoted individually. If you would rather travel directly, send your flight details and ask what can be arranged.
How the round-trip saving applies
A published per-seat saving applies when both legs have published per-person fares, and it appears in your review before you send the request. Quote-only routes and vehicles priced per vehicle have no agreed round-trip discount. Availability and any exceptional-day supplement are confirmed before payment, so take the final total from your written confirmation.
Request, confirm, then pay
Sending the form does not reserve a seat. The team checks both legs and replies with written confirmation and payment instructions, so do not travel on your request receipt. Read the changes and cancellation terms before paying, and if your return date may move, say so in your notes.
